82 year old Nancy Pelosi announced today that he is stepping down as leader of the Democrats in House of Representativesa position he has held since 2003.

Pelosi “made history” as the first female speaker of the House of Representatives, and most recently she made international headlines for her visit to the self-governing island of Taiwan.

FROM Republicans now having regained control of the House of Representatives since last week’s midterm elections, Pelosi can claim to remain House Democratic minority leader. Today, however, she announced that she would no longer run for the office. Therefore, in January, she will have to hand over the reins of power to a Democratic congressman who will succeed her.

Potential successor

It is still unclear who might be her successor. The 52-year-old Democratic congressman from New York seems to be the favorite Hakim Jeffreys.

“The time has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic faction. I am grateful that so many people are ready to take on this responsibility, ”she said from the floor of the House of Representatives today in an emotional atmosphere, before she was applauded not only by Democrats, but also by some Republicans.
