European nations could find themselves scrambling to replenish their arms stockpiles after sending so many weapons to Ukraine since the start of the war launched by Vladimir Putin on February 24, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned on Tuesday.
“It is important to act together to avoid dividing the market, to avoid competition,” Borrell said in Brussels.
According to him, a situation similar to the one during the pandemic, when EU member states started buying vaccines against COVID, should be avoided.
“All together means better prices, better quality and better time,” Josep Borrell said, according to Agerpres, as quoted by DPA.
A European official has pointed out several times in the past two months that the stockpiles of weapons in the European Union are getting smaller, as member states continue to send weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.
“The military stocks of most member states were, I wouldn’t say, exhausted, but to a large extent because we provided many opportunities to Ukrainians. They need to be refueled. The best way to replenish is to do it together. It will be cheaper,” Borrell said in October, according to The Guardian.
The cost of weapons and military equipment supplied to Ukraine by EU countries
The European Union and its member states have provided Ukraine with arms and military equipment worth at least 8 billion euros, Josep Borrell, quoted by Reuters, said on Monday.
According to him, this is about 45 percent of the military aid provided to Kyiv by the United States.
Borrell added that the EU will “continue the international isolation of Russia” and introduce “restrictive measures” against the Russian economy.
The head of European diplomacy stated this on Monday after the meeting in Brussels with his European colleagues.
