Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday it was critical to get Moscow to join “real” peace talks, calling Russia a destabilizing force on a range of issues, including climate change.
In his late-night video message, Zelenskiy denounced Russia’s “destabilizing influence” as the world grapples with war, energy and food crises, and what he called the destruction of established international relations. According to him, the climate agenda is “really suffering”, but it cannot be “postponed”.
“Therefore, anyone who is serious about the climate agenda should also be serious about the need to immediately stop Russian aggression, restore our territorial integrity, and force Russia into real peace talks,” Zelensky said.
An adviser to Mr Zelensky said earlier that Ukraine was ready to negotiate with the Russian leader, but not with President Vladimir Putin.
The Washington Post reported over the weekend that the Biden administration had urged Ukrainian leaders to declare their willingness to negotiate.
