From the next academic year, a basic course of military training will be introduced in Russian schools, Russian Education Minister Serhiy Kravtsov said on Wednesday, TASS quotes.
“From the next school year, it will be in schools, now it is being prepared for January 1, then it will be tested,” he told Russian journalists on Wednesday.
This became known after the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, General Valery Gerasimov, sent a corresponding proposal to Serhii Mironov, the president of the “Just Russia – For Truth” parliamentary party, which is part of the so-called “systemic opposition”. in Russia, which supports the policy of the Kremlin.
Later, the Minister of Education of Russia, after questioning Mironov, who is considered one of the most influential Russian parliamentarians, announced that he was already working on a project on this matter.
Kravtsov has not yet specified the details of the plan, but Russian state media said it calls for 35 hours of military training in schools and colleges.
During the last two years of training, Gerasimov requested 140 hours of military training.
Russia is militarizing its students
The move comes in the broader context of the “militarization” of schoolchildren in Russia following the start of a “special military operation” on February 24.
At the opening of the 2022-2023 school year, shocking footage of children holding bouquets of flowers with the letter Z, “patriotic lessons” about the war in Ukraine, and performances in military uniform appeared on social networks.
“Students will not be left alone in the face of the information war being waged against our country,” the education minister said on September 1, explaining some of the changes that have already been made to the Russian education system.
Thus, according to the decision of the Ministry, in all schools of this country, every week will begin with the raising of the flag of the Russian Federation in the premises of educational institutions and the performance of the national anthem.
Please organize additional hours with the general topic “Conversations about the weekend”. According to the new provision, there will be 34 such lessons in the academic year.
If the so-called “patriotic education” is offered for younger children with the teaching of general information about the country, state symbols, history, etc., then for those who study in the 11th grade, the last in the Russian education system, the expected result of these lessons is “students’ understanding the goals of the “special military operation”, as well as the fact that the residents of the “LPR” and “DPR” (the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk republics) are Russians, so it is important to return them to Russia.
Russian students learn about the “rotten West”
At the end of October, Meduza investigative journalists wrote with reference to several sources close to the Kremlin and from the Russian university environment that the introduction of a mandatory subject of ideology for students is also being prepared.
It is assumed that the new subject will be introduced in higher education institutions from the next academic year and, according to current plans, it will be studied by students of non-humanities majors during the year.
Humanities students would study it for several semesters, while political science and history students would study it throughout their studies.
One of the sources close to the Kremlin succinctly characterized the content of the new ideological discipline as follows:
“The West is rotting, it constantly pampered Russia, but its time has passed, we have a great future, a rich history and culture. It is necessary to use the moment of crisis and get everything out of it.”
