Choosing the next production you want to watch can be a tedious process on Netflix, given the sheer number of offers on the screen when you open the platform, especially if you only have certain favorite genres.

But there is a way to filter Netflix to the genre you’re looking for: Netflix Codes. Instead of just passively accepting what the algorithm suggests based on your previews, learn how to use the codes to choose the theme of your next TV stop.

What are Netflix Codes?

Codes are based on a number system that corresponds to a specific genre or subgenre, which the algorithm uses to classify and make recommendations.

For example, instead of scrolling for “Horrors,” you could search for “Small Town Scares” (81496215) to get more accurate results.

And in the section “Thrillers” there are 13 subgenres, from classic or action to supernatural. Netflix currently has around 36,000 codes. But note that they can only be used on the website, not on TV.

How are Netflix codes generated?

The platform ranks its movies and series using a combination of human and artificial intelligence. In other words, Netflix has tons of employees watching, rating, and tagging for metadata: movie endings, themes, locations, main characters, and more.

Not surprisingly, the volume of data became huge, forcing engineers to intervene. Thanks to the magic of algorithms, they were divided into tens of thousands of different microgenres for better search accuracy.

How it works

The easiest way is on the codes web page. Here’s how:

1. Open netflix-codes.com on your computer or mobile phone

2. Find the genre or subgenre you want to explore

3. Click on the code of the selected genre or subgenre

4. If you are using a device that has Netflix installed, the app will take you directly to the genre or subgenre of your choice. If the app is not installed, it will open Netflix through the browser and you will see the available movies and series

5. Click on the title you want to watch or save it and then find it on your TV for convenient viewing

Success! Or save the article for the weekend…
