The US Department of Defense announced a new package of security assistance to Ukraine worth about $400 million as part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), CNN reports.
The set includes tanks and drones.
“The USAI package underscores the continued commitment of the United States to support Ukraine by meeting its most urgent requirements … while strengthening the ability of the Ukrainian armed forces to defend its sovereignty over the long term,” he said at a press conference on Friday. , Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh.
The package includes refurbished T-72 tanks, new Phoenix Ghost drones, funds for the modernization of the HAWK air defense system, which will be sent to Ukraine, as well as other military equipment and ammunition.
The tanks will come from the Czech Republic, Singh said, with the US paying for the repair of 45 of them and the Netherlands paying for the repair of another 45 tanks.
Some of the tanks should be delivered by the end of December, Singh said.
“These will be the most technically advanced tanks on the battlefield,” she added.
Singh also reported that some of the Phoenix Ghost drones previously promised to Ukraine have already been delivered.
“We’ve already seen success on the battlefield, but I don’t have an exact timetable for when the next batch will be delivered,” she said.
The United States will restore HAWK anti-aircraft missile systems for the first time with funding from the Ukraine Security Initiative, Singh said during the conference.
Singh declined to say how many HAWK air defense systems would be repaired and sent to Ukraine, citing operational security.
Ukraine asked NATO allies and the US for additional air defense systems as Russian forces continued to attack the country with Iranian-made missiles and drones.
