Employees of the US Embassy in Moscow “were able to visit Brittney Griner today,” the basketball champion detained in Russia, Karin Jean-Pierre, spokeswoman for the White House, said on Thursday, according to AFP.
“We’re told he’s doing as well as he can under the circumstances,” she told reporters accompanying US President Joe Biden on a trip to New Mexico.
“The US government has made an important offer to the Russians to end the unacceptable and unjustified detention of Americans Britney Griner and Paul Whelan,” she said.
“The U.S. government has supported this proposal and offered alternatives through every possible channel, even though the Russians are not negotiating in good faith,” she said.
On October 25, a Russian court rejected the appeal of an American basketball player sentenced in Russia to nine years in prison for cannabis trafficking, amid very high tensions between Moscow and Washington.
Russia is also detaining former US soldier Paul Whelan.
According to Russian diplomatic sources, a possible prisoner swap could involve Britney Griner and a prominent Russian arms dealer who is being held in the US, Viktor Bout.
Booth was arrested in Thailand in 2008 and is currently serving a 25-year sentence in the United States.
