“Breast milk is the gold standard of infant nutrition because it is uniquely adapted to meet their needs,” says AUTH Professor Elizabeth Diamanti, Director of the 2nd University Neonatology Clinic – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, on the occasion of the 4th Clinical Breastfeeding Training organized by November 5 in the assembly hall of the Papageorgiou hospital.
“Breastfeeding and breast milk provide significant benefits to both the mother and the newborn, and the role of well-informed health professionals is seen as critical to promoting breastfeeding. Therefore, they, and especially pediatricians, should make every effort to create and promote safe and supportive environments for mothers who choose to breastfeed. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the promotion of breastfeeding. But this once again confirmed how wonderfully this “living tissue” protects the health of babies, ”says Ms. Diamanti.
Theme of the 4th Breastfeeding Clinical Workshop “Guidelines for the promotion of breastfeeding and the use of breast milk in clinical practice – CDC 2022”, organized on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week (November 1-7) and addressed to medical professionals such as neonatologists, pediatricians , obstetricians, midwives and nutritionists.
The Seminar will be held in the Assembly Hall of the Hospital (8:00-16:00) and during it the scientists of the Clinic will strive to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding for the survival and proper development of newborns, as well as for the health of mothers.
It should be noted that since 2019, the MENN University Neonatology Clinic Papageorgiou 2nd University Hospital has been operating a Breast Milk Bank, equipped with the sponsorship of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, providing better nutrition for babies thanks to the donation of mothers who have excess milk.
