Viral Load – Wastewater

During the week of October 24–30, 2022, compared to the week of October 17–23, 2022, there were trends of increasing average weekly SARS-CoV-2 viral load in municipal wastewater in eight of the twelve (8/12) regions tested by the National Wastewater Epidemiology Network (EDEL) EODY and declining trends in four regions (4/12) EDL.

An upward trend in the average weekly urban wastewater load was observed in Patras (+176%), Volos (+113%), Alexandroupolis (+102%), Ioannina (+100%), Xanthi (+46%), Larissa (+ 41%) and Corfu (+38%), while growth was marginal in Thessaloniki (+28%). Downtrends were observed in Agios Nikolaos (-57%), Heraklion (-52%), Attica (-36%) and Chania (-36%).

Mutations

All new sub-variants can now also be found in Greece, the latest being XBB. In particular, based on the results of the analysis of the National Network for Genomic Surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which operates under the coordination of EODY, from 338 randomly selected or targeted samples belonging to the period from September 28 to October 25, the Omicron strain (B. 1.1.529).

Of these 338 samples, 28 (8.3%) were identified as BA.2, 8 (2.4%) as BA.4, and 302 (89.3%) as BA.5. Of the BA.2 strains, 17 (60.7%) were identified as subvariant BA.2.75 (Centaur) and 8 (28.6%) as XBB, and from strains BA.5 12 (4.0%) as subvariant BQ. 1 and 1 (0.3%) as BQ.1.1.
