
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told his Iranian counterpart on Wednesday that Western media had launched a campaign that could provoke an escalation of tensions in the Persian Gulf, Reuters reported.
During a phone conversation with Hossein Amirabdollahian, Lavrov commented on “the harmfulness of the information campaign launched by the Western media,” the ministry said in a statement summarizing his remarks.
Lavrov told Amirabdollakhian that such actions could lead to a dangerous escalation of tension in the strategically important region, the ministry added.
On Tuesday, Washington expressed concern about Iran’s vague threats against Saudi Arabia and said it would not hesitate to respond if necessary.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Saudi Arabia has shared intelligence with the United States about an imminent Iranian attack on targets in the kingdom.
