Former world chess champion Anatoliy Karpov is currently in an induced coma following an incident that has sparked debate over how and when he suffered the head injuries that led to his condition, Marca reports.
According to the Russian Chess Federation, Karpov’s (71-year-old) condition is “a consequence of a fall.”
His daughter Sofia said that the Grandmaster was found unconscious in his home after a domestic accident.
However, businessman Andriy Kovalev wrote on his Telegram channel that Anatoly Karpov was found unconscious near the lower chamber of the State Duma of the Russian Parliament (he is a deputy), and the “fall” was actually an attack by unknown people.
The third version, which is circulating in the Russian press and social networks, is that he got drunk near the parliament and got into an accident while intoxicated. However, his daughter denied this version, stressing at the same time that everything should have happened last Saturday.
The Russian news agency TASS, citing Albert Stepanyan (a close friend of Karpov), indicates that the former chess player is in a stable condition and rejects any thoughts of aggression.
Anatoly Karpov was the world chess champion between 1975 and 1985, when he was dethroned by his compatriot Garry Kasparov.
