The committee of the US Congress, which is investigating the storming of the Capitol last year, has issued a subpoena, according to which former President Donald Trump will be called to testify before lawmakers, the BBC reports, citing News.ro.
Addressing him, the subpoena reads: “You were at the center of the first and only attempt by the President of the United States to overturn the election results.”
“You knew that this activity is illegal and unconstitutional,” the document also states.
Trump could be impeached if he does not comply with the subpoena.
The committee is investigating the violent attack by Trump supporters on the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
Seven Democrats and two Republicans voted unanimously last week to compel the Republican to testify about his role in the riot.
Lawmakers say Trump encouraged his supporters to reject the results of the 2020 presidential election, prompting them to storm the halls of Congress in an attempt to prevent Joe Biden from being declared the winner.
They claim that his false claims about election meddling and claims that the election was “stolen” were a deliberate attempt to incite a coup d’état against the US government.
However, they have not referred him to the US Department of Justice for potential charges.
The subpoena came just hours after former Trump strategist Steve Bannon was fined $6,500 and sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of Congress.
He was convicted after he refused to testify or provide documents to the Committee on January 6.
If Republicans regain control of the House after the midterm elections in November, which is expected, the Committee’s investigation will end on January 6 and the committee will be disbanded.
Trump, who has sharply criticized the probe, calling it a ploy to distract US voters from the “disaster” of the Democratic administration, is expected to refuse to testify and appeal the subpoena.
