A 16-month-old girl has died after being trampled by a giraffe in a nature reserve in South Africa, and her mother is in critical condition in hospital. The incident, the circumstances of which are unknown, is being investigated, the BBC reports, News.ro reports.
The 16-month-old girl lived with her mother in Kuleni Park in KwaZulu-Natal province.
Police told the BBC that details were unclear, but that they had launched an investigation to establish what happened.
“The child was taken to the nearest medical facility where she died,” said police lieutenant Nkobile Madlala.
It’s unclear where on the reservation, which has 14 cabins, Wednesday’s incident occurred.
The park is located 16 km from Hluhluwe in KwaZulu-Natal, a province popular with local and foreign tourists.
On its website, the farm says visitors can “enjoy close encounters with the animals while walking or biking along the many trails.”
Giraffes are the tallest mammals in the world and are usually not aggressive. However, females can be aggressive in defending their young.
In 2018, the wife and son of British scientist Sam William were trampled by a female giraffe at Blyde Wildlife Estate in South Africa.
The two were treated at a private hospital in Johannesburg and recovered.
