The Romanian Football Cup concludes on the evening of Thursday, October 20, with the first stage of the group stage. From 21:00, two compatriots will play at the “Cluj-Arena” stadium in Cluj-Napoca: the University and the ChFR. The rivalry is huge, the duel of the galleries often surpasses the legal norms on the surrounding streets.
Two coaches go to take notes. Eugen Neagoe is gradually consolidating his solid form, while Dan Petrescu’s CFR is also preparing for great results in the Conference League.
With Neagoe on the bench, the Transylvanians’ cheeks turned red. In 8 matches with a new coach on the bench, “U Cluj” suffered only two defeats, even against the two best teams of the Super League: 0:1 against “Rapid” and 0:2 against “Farul”, the latter in the last round.
“I would be afraid of Farul only if Hagi played,” Neagoe ventured before the match with the leader. Now he could just as well have said that he was afraid of the CFR if only he had seen Dan Petrescu undressing.
Since September 15, CFR keeps it only in positive results. Only a draw with UTA in the Championship included a perfect 5-match winning streak, including two clean sheets against Slavia Prague in the Conference League groups.
Even the last match, on Monday, was not easy in the Super League. The Gruia group bounced back from a 0-1 draw with Sepsi Sf.Gheorghe to win 2-1 and close to within 8 points of leaders Farul and 3 points behind Rapid, with two more in arrears.
With a busy schedule, CFR is not thinking too much about the Cup. As such, Petrescu will be rested for the starts for the battles he will have to fight on two other major fronts as he seeks to join the European Spring Conference League and attack the top spot in the Super League.
Group C of the Romanian Cup also includes KSM Oleksandria, KSM Dumbravica, Farul Constanta and Rapid Bucharest. The first two places continue. Rapid won at Dumbravica and Farul drew with Oleksandria, both played on Tuesday.
Superbet offers odds of 1.95 for a draw at half-time.
