Some hospitals in Germany face a growing risk of bankruptcy due to high electricity costs, warned Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, quoted by dpa on Sunday, Agerpres reported.

“If we do not take measures quickly and really radically, there will be closures” of the clinics, the minister said on Sunday to the public broadcaster ARD.

A German official said he would hold discussions on Tuesday about increasing federal aid to hospitals with Finance Minister Christian Lindner, adding that he could not give numbers until then.

Earlier this week, the German Hospital Federation called on authorities to take immediate action to stop potential clinic closures, saying the hospital sector faced a material and energy shortfall of around 15 billion euros this year and next.

When asked what these estimates were based on, Karl Lauterbach admitted that “hospitals will face a very serious liquidity problem in the next few months.”

Germany has about 1,900 hospitals with a total of about 490,000 beds, dpa adds.
