The Academy of Athens at the plenary meeting on October 13, 2022, elected the former President of the Republic and Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Mr. Athens. Procopio Pavlopoulos as a full member in the declared place of public law (administrative law-constitutional law) in the 3rd class of ethics and political sciences.

Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos, with his entire academic career, his rich and high-level writing and teaching work, without a doubt, has become an outstanding scholar in the field of public law. In addition, it is worth mentioning his political career, which culminated in his ascension to the highest position in the Greek state, which he held from 2015 to 2020 as President of the Republic.

He was born in Kalamata in 1950. In 1968 he entered the Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, from which he graduated with honors in 1973. Having received a scholarship from the French government, he continued his studies at the graduate school of the University of Athens. Paris II, where in 1974 he received the DEA de Droit Public and in 1977 he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Doctorat d’État) from the aforementioned university. He taught as a visiting professor (1986) at the University of Paris II. In 1982, he was appointed as a lecturer at the School of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and after consecutive tenures as Associate Professor (1983) and Associate Professor (1985), he was elected Professor of the same school in 1989. After the end of his term in 2017. he was awarded the title of honorary and honorary professor of law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

At the same time, he distinguished himself by his presence in the political arena in a number of positions. Between 2004 and 2009, he was permanent Minister of the Interior. On February 18, 2015, he was elected President of the Republic with 233 votes out of 300 and ended his term on March 13, 2020.

Mr. Pavlopoulos presented an extensive written work in the field of legal sciences, consisting of books, articles and opinions. In particular, it includes 31 books and studies, as well as many articles in Greek and other languages, especially in English and French. In addition, in the volume “Etypos Logos” (published by Livani, Athens, 2003, p. 469), he collected his articles, which were published in the daily press between 1987 and 2003 and are divided into three parts. sections: “Politics”, “Society” and “Institutions”.

He has received many awards at the Greek and international level. Among other things, he was awarded the highest awards of nine states, as well as the Gold Medal of the Olympic Order of the International Olympic Committee. He was also awarded the highest ecclesiastical honors outside and inside Greece.
