Ukraine’s accession to NATO could lead to the third world war, said Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Oleksandr Venediktov in an interview given on Thursday to the TASS agency, used by Reuters.

“Kyiv knows very well that such a step will mean a guaranteed escalation towards the third world war,” Venediktov said, as quoted by the Russian news agency.

“This, it seems, is the main thing – to create informational noise and to attract attention again,” he added.

Venediktov also repeated Russia’s position that the West’s aid to Ukraine indicates that it is “directly involved in the conflict.”

In late September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced that his country would apply for “accelerated” NATO membership, immediately after Russia officially annexed four Ukrainian regions. (Source: Agerpres)
