OUR Evangelos MytileneosPresident and CEO of MYTILINEOS was elected as its President Eurometals, the Pan-European Union of Non-Ferrous Metallurgy Enterprises, during the regular General Assembly of Members. He will succeed Mikael Staffas, CEO of Boliden Sweden, who has held the position since October 2018.
Guy Tiran, CEO of Eurometaux, said among other things: “It is with great pleasure that I welcome Mr. Evangelos Mytilineos as our new President. His wealth of experience in aluminum and energy makes him an excellent leader in our industry in the midst of the unprecedented crisis we are facing. While Europe is committed to strengthening its strategic autonomy in the metals and hydrocarbons sector necessary for the energy transition, it is important that we entrust our representation to a true industry leader whose activities span the entire supply chain, from mining to the final product.
At the same time, we thank Mikael Staffas for his excellent leadership over the past four years. During his presidency, the issue of commodity security rose to the top of the European political agenda. Mikael led by example and demonstrated in practice that high standards of sustainable development are a catalyst for industry differentiation at the international level. At the same time, he placed great emphasis on the need for co-shaping European policies to ensure the competitiveness of the sector worldwide.”
“I am honored to take over as President of Eurometaux at a critical time for both Europe and our industry. It’s time to be at the forefront of the future not only in non-ferrous metallurgy, but also in the European economy. To protect our values and the strength of our industry, which is now facing multiple threats. Among our first priorities will be enough competitive energy for all so that we can provide jobs across Europe, social stability and economic growth. We will work hard.
I am determined to make a personal effort and I am confident that I can count on the entire Eurometaux team and our members to achieve our common goals. My intention as a newly elected president is to reach out to politicians and push for immediate and effective action.
And in keeping with the history of Eurometaux, we will not stop at simply pointing out a problem: we will bring concrete proposals to the table to help revitalize our industry and ensure our global competitiveness.”
In the next two years, Eurometaux, under the chairmanship of E. Mytileneou, will pay special attention to cooperation with both the European authorities and the national governments of the EU member states in order to alleviate the problems faced by the steel industry in the midst of this unprecedented energy crisis.
Important goals will also be the completion of the upcoming EU law on raw materials. (Raw Materials Act) and encouraging investment in mining, processing and processing activities in Europe. Other top priorities will be European Chemicals Law Reform (REACH), a new EU due diligence policy, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the Sustainable Foods Framework.
Members of Eurometaux include giant companies from all over Europe such as Alcoa, Glencore, Hydro, Rio Tinto, the chambers of industry of the Member States of the European Union, as well as associations representing similar but equally important industries such as the European Aluminum Union. (European aluminium).
The annual turnover of non-ferrous metallurgy is more than 120 billion euros, and the annual production volume exceeds 47 million tons. As a reminder, Eurometaux recently sent a letter to the President of the European Commission and the relevant commissioners, expressing its concern about the sharp increase in electricity prices, which threatens not only the achievement of the goals of the Green Deal, but also the industry itself, which must cover exorbitant costs in order to continue their activities.
