The 1986 World Cup quarter-final ball between Argentina and England is up for auction. This is the ball with which Diego Maradona scored two of the most talked about goals in the history of the competition.
The Argentine football player opened the scoring in the 51st minute with the famous “God’s hand”. Four minutes later, he became the recipient of the ball behind the cross and, having conceded almost the entire England team, he doubled the goals of Albiceleste.
Argentina won 2-1 and lifted the trophy by beating West Germany 3-2 in the final.
The ball is sold by the Tunisian referee Ali Bin Nasser, who refereeed that match. “This ball is part of the history of international football, now is the right time to share it with the whole world, I hope that the buyer can show it or otherwise share it with the public,” commented bin Nasser.
The ball is expected to sell for at least £2.5 million. The auction will be hosted by Graeme Budd on November 16th and bidders will be able to register and bid online from October 28th.
