Chaiko is thus the latest sacked official in a series of high-ranking officials who have been dismissed following a series of defeats and humiliations suffered by Russia in the war it launched in Ukraine.

The RBC publication reports that instead Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov was appointed to head the Eastern Military District, which includes troops based in the Russian Far East.

The Eastern Military District is one of the five that are part of the Russian Armed Forces.

There was no official confirmation of the personnel changes from the Kremlin or the Ministry of Defense of Russia, but the head of his native Dagestan, Muradov, congratulated him on his appointment to command the Eastern Military District.
