What does excitement do to you… I watched with my own eyes how Adonis Kyru climbed with tireless energy along the uninhabited rocky island of Argosaronica, full of impenetrable slopes, under the merciless August sun. His trained eye noticed the trace of an ancient rampart there, and he reached it with dexterous steps, as an ibex confidently walks along the edge of an abyss. In the mid-fifties, while still a student, he made his first archaeological discovery. Several pottery sherds he collected in the Fragti Cave, near the Hermionides Valley – at that time a shepherd’s pasture – documented one of the most important Paleolithic sites in the Greek area, as it was probably inhabited by Neanderthals and, of course, Homo Sapiens.

For over 60 years, Kirou has carried out incredible research, with a base in the vast Argolis region and a radius of action that extends south. He never studied archeology, but honored a great family tradition, serving as editor and director of the historical newspaper Estia for 23 years. He followed his father’s advice and combined different activities in his life. A charismatic writer with many good books to his credit, in 1990 he presented Lamon’s edition called “At the Argolic Crossroads”, dedicated to his wanderings, discoveries and history of this region in prehistoric and ancient Greek times. . His work was awarded the Academy of Athens. Thirty years later, the time came for a second volume from the same editions for the late Roman and early Christian centuries up to the Second Venetian reign of the 17th century. The presentation of the volume will take place in the main hall of the Parnassus Philological Association, on Karitsa Square, tomorrow at 19.30.
