“We will not be idle”

“We will not sit idly by as Putin maliciously attempts to annex parts of Ukraine,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.

The US Treasury Department announced sanctions against 14 people in the Russian military-industrial complex, two senior officials of the country’s central bank, family members of senior officials (Russian Prime Minister Mishustin and Defense Secretary Sergei Shoigu), and 278 members of the Russian legislature, “because that they allowed Russian fictitious referendums and an attempted annexation of sovereign Ukrainian territory.” Among those subject to US sanctions is Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak.

The Treasury also issued instructions warning of an increased risk of sanctions for those outside Russia if they provide political or financial support to Moscow. “The current US export controls to Russia may apply to organizations in third countries that seek to provide material support to the military and industrial sectors of Russia and Belarus,” including replenishing Russian supplies, the Treasury said in a statement.

The list of sanctions includes 57 new entities in Russia and Crimea, which Washington accuses of supporting the “brutal attack of the Russian military on Ukraine.” These include companies that have purchased or attempted to purchase US-made products for the Russian military and companies that have been looking for quantum computing technology for a military enterprise.
