As emphasized, in principle, there was a “withdrawal” of the competent oil minister, who expressed reservations – “remarks”, as he called them, regarding the finally signed draft memorandum.
The Libyan economy minister at the last moment seems to have acquired the appropriate authority and signed on behalf of the government of national unity, at a time when the minister in charge was actually in South Africa.
The same sources highlighted the Libyan Foreign Ministry’s report, made during a joint press conference with their Turkish counterpart, that the Turkish-Libyan “memorandum” of 2019 has not yet been ratified.
This was followed by a sharp reaction from the chairman of the Libyan House of Representatives, as well as the competent committee on energy and natural resources, which last night in a long statement stressed that the mandate of the government of national unity had expired and had no right to sign international treaties.
Consequently, the memorandum signed yesterday is illegal and invalid, and, as he states, among other things, the statement of the Libyan parliament “is not even worth the ink with which it was printed.”
They were also a reminder of the annoyance of Turkish officials, such as yesterday’s statements by AKP spokesman Omer Celik.
In this context, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias today continues the round of briefings by the ambassadors of the permanent members of the Security Council (yesterday France and the United States, today Britain and China) and will travel to Cairo next Sunday for a thorough discussion with his Egyptian counterpart Sameha Shukri.
He also had the opportunity to present the whole Turkish provocation by showing the relevant cards to a group of American members of the House of Representatives (Committee on Military Affairs) who are visiting Greece these days.
