It was created in 1994 in honor of the signing of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers signed in 1966 by UNESCO and the International Labor Organization.

This Recommendation deals with the position and working conditions of teachers worldwide, highlighting standards with regard to teacher policy, recruitment and training, as well as lifelong learning, employment and working conditions.

World Teachers’ Day is dedicated to “recognizing, appreciating and improving all the world’s teachers.”

Every year, UNESCO and the International Organization for Education organize information campaigns about teachers and their role in the development of students and society.

UNESCO says everyone can help celebrate the profession by raising awareness of teaching issues and ensuring that respect for teachers is part of the natural order of things.

More than 100 countries celebrate World Teachers’ Day, and each country has its own events, such as in the case of India, which celebrates Teachers’ Day on September 5th.
