81-year-old American scientist Barry Sharpless enjoys the rare privilege of being awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the second time, making him the fifth person in the world to receive the coveted prize twice. In 2002, he was awarded an award for discoveries in the field of asymmetric catalysis technology.
An American scientist based in California and 58-year-old Dane Morten Meldal of the University of Copenhagen have been honored for their pioneering work on “click chemistry,” a new form of molecular bonding.
This is mainly used in the development of pharmaceutical therapies, for DNA mapping or the creation of new materials.
American Carolyn Bertozzi, 55, is honored for her discovery of bioorthogonal chemistry, a chemical reaction that can be initiated in a living organism without destroying or changing its chemical composition.
Bertozzi’s discovery, which has become one of the favorites for this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry, mainly opens up ways to improve the effectiveness of anti-cancer treatments.
“I’m surprised, I’m sitting here and suffocating,” the winner said when the Academy contacted her by phone to announce that she had won the Nobel Prize.
Among the most famous winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry is Marie Curie, who also shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband. Nearly two decades after her mother, Marie Curie’s daughter, Irene Joliot-Curie, also won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The prize is 10 million SEK (about 920,000 euros).
The announcement of the Nobel Prize in Literature is expected tomorrow, followed by the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, this time from Oslo, and on Monday the latest in a series of expected awards for this year, the Nobel Prize in Economics, will be announced.
