The US Senate voted on Thursday to provide Ukraine with new funds in the amount of more than 12 billion dollars, in the context of which it approved the extension of the US federal budget until December, reports AFP.
The text, approved this afternoon by senators from both parties, includes an important military component for Kyiv as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepares to formalize Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions.
About 3 billion US dollars were allocated for training, equipping and paying the Ukrainian military.
The package also includes more than $4.5 billion to ensure “continuity of government” in Ukraine and address Kyiv’s macroeconomic needs.
Several billion dollars will also be allocated to the US military, which will use it to finance the deployment of troops in neighboring countries and replenish weapons stockpiles.
“After seven months of conflict, it is clear that US aid has largely helped the Ukrainian people resist Putin’s brutal aggression,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday.
“But the struggle is far from over and we must continue to help the brave and courageous Ukrainian people,” he pleaded from the hall.
The new package will increase to more than $65 billion in aid that the United States has provided to Ukraine since the beginning of the year. It now has to be voted on by the House of Representatives before US President Joe Biden signs it.
