The geographic relief of Andros and the natural beauty that accompanies it is a pole of attraction for visitors looking for the “adventure” of crossing trails in the Cyclades. In fact, hiking is the form of tourism that the tourism authorities of the island rely on, including the extension of the tourist season, as emphasized by the deputy mayor for tourism of the municipality of Andros, Nikos Moustakas. MPE.
An impressive walking network of about 100 kilometers, alternating mountain and coastal landscape, centuries-old monasteries and local gastronomy are the island’s strong points for attracting visitors after September, as highlighted. As Andros moved at a faster pace in the previous period than in 2019, as local catering and hospitality entrepreneurs pointed out to APE-MPE, the island attracted visitors from France, Germany and Israel during this period.
They often come to walk around the island and even declare that they are delighted with both the weather and the natural beauty of Andros. Focusing on hiking, in October 2015 the island actually received a certification mark for its routes from the European Confederation of Tourist Clubs and is the only island in Europe to receive this certification. The certification mark was a natural consequence of the systematic efforts to record routes and allocate paths by the Andros Routes network.
Besides the paths male it has a special fund for religious pilgrimages, as also evidenced by the significant number of visitors they visit. On Andros, you can visit wonderful monasteries built from the Byzantine period to the last years of the Ottoman Empire. Some of them have been recently renovated. All of them are of great interest, as they contain important sacred relics.
The island has a rich religious history, even highlighting some of the prominent hagiographers whose works survive and adorn the island’s various churches. In addition to the monasteries, old Byzantine churches can be visited, such as the churches of Taxiarch in Messaria, Melida and Ipsila, Panagia in Messaturi and Agios Nikolaos in Korti. The patron saint of the island is Panagia Theoskepasti, which is located in Chora, near Paraporti beach and is celebrated every year.
