Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup from November 20 to December 18, and to mark the occasion, China has made a unique gift to the organizers in the Persian Gulf.
So, the Chinese clarified that they will offer Qatar two giant pandas, reports AFP.
“This is a gift from 1.4 billion Chinese people to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and will certainly become a new symbol of China-Qatar friendship,” Chinese Ambassador to Doha Zhou Jian said during a reception in the country’s capital.
Suhail and Soraya are two giant pandas provided by China for the organizers in Qatar
Two bears named “Suhail” and “Soraya” are expected in Qatar in October, just before the final tournament of the 2022 World Cup, the diplomat said.
Suhail is the name of one of the brightest stars visible in the Persian Gulf region, while Soraya is the Arabic name for the Pleiades constellation.
China, the most populous country on the planet, did not qualify for the World Cup, but Chinese companies have been involved in the construction of megaprojects related to this winter’s event.
Two more Chinese giant pandas were loaned to France for 10 years in 2012 as part of “panda diplomacy,” a gift China uses to strengthen ties with other countries.
Since the loan was renewed, the two bears are still at Beauval Zoological Park, where they have given birth to three more pandas, according to Agerpres.
