Toyota Motor has decided to close its plant in Russia after suspending production and importing cars to the country in March due to supply chain disruptions, Reuters reported, taken from News.ro.
“During this period, we have maintained our full workforce and have ensured that our plant is ready to resume production should circumstances permit. However, after six months, we have not been able to resume normal operations, and we see no indication that we will be able to resume them in the future,” Toyota said in a statement.
The Japanese group will respect all its social obligations and offer employees significant additional benefits.
At the same time, Toyota will retain service for Toyota and Lexus cars in Russia, as well as a dealer network.
The plant, which has a production capacity of 100,000 cars a year and produced the Camry and RAV4 models, will be retained and may be sold in the future, according to sources cited by the Russian publication Kommersant.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and the regional authorities are working out possible scenarios for the plant’s development, the ministry said.
Many factories in Russia have suspended production and laid off workers due to a lack of high-tech equipment and an exodus of Western manufacturers after Moscow sent armed forces into Ukraine on February 24.
