Greek athletes have been among the best rowers in the world in recent years and prove it in every sport. Yesterday Antonis Papakonstantinou took second place in the sculling weight category at the ongoing World Championships in Razice, Czech Republic. The performance of Zoya Fitziou, who took 5th place in the lightweight division, is also considered very good.
24-year-old Antonis Papakonstantinou, after winning the gold medal at the European Championships in Munich, wanted to replenish his … gold collection, and he almost succeeded. From the beginning of the race he was in the lead, but in the last 500 meters he lost momentum and was overtaken by Gabriele Soares. Finally, the Italian took the lead on 7/3/40, followed by our champion on 7/5/42. Rajko Hrvat of Slovenia finished third with a time of 7.18.31. This is the 4th Greek rowing world medal from this competition.
Zoe Fitsiou has added another success to her resume. At the European Championships in August, she placed 2nd in the lightweight division. At the World Championships, she managed to enter the top six rowers in the world, which in itself is a success. She covered the distance in 7.54.21 to finish 5th in the world, leaving Italy’s Stephanie Boutignon in 6th. Ionela Kozmiuc of Romania (7.42.59) climbed to the top of the podium, followed by Martin Veldhuis of the Netherlands (7.44.48) and Jackie Kindle of New Zealand (7.44.98).
Tomorrow Stefanos Dushkos on a skiff will also compete for a place on the podium of the competition.
Stefanos Duskos reached the final of the Skif. The “golden” Olympic champion Tokyo received a “ticket” under the 6th number and tomorrow he will claim a place on the podium of the tournament. If he succeeds, he will be the first Greek to achieve something like this in this competition.
Tomorrow Thanasis Palaiopanos and Yiannis Kalandaridis will be among the top six crews in the world. Our champions in a solid race managed to finish second in their sculls semi-final and celebrate reaching the World Championship final.
