4 music concerts at Premiere Nights

At the beginning of every autumn, Athens “breathes” cinema, because Prime Nights occupy the capital’s theaters for several days with long-awaited premieres, special congratulations and important guests of the seventh art.

This year the Athens Film Festival returns for the 28th time. from 28 September to 9 October. And like every year, this year’s themes we’ll be enjoying in movies will be music, as the festival has a tradition of musical films.

That’s why we choose 4 musical films not to be missed at this year’s premiere nights:

“Moonage Daydream” (Brett Morgen, 2022)

No matter what people say about David Bowie, there will always be other unexplored aspects of one of the most versatile personalities the music industry has given us, and it goes way beyond that. Brett Morgen, after collecting a wealth of anecdotal material from Bowie’s archive, produced “Moonage Daydream” with the blessing of his family, a documentary that the Guardian gave 5 stars and called “a startling mixture of elegy, celebration and visceral portraiture.” In terms of the film’s sound, it was edited by “heavyweight” Tony Visconti and producer of some of Bowie’s most important productions.

It will show: Friday 30 September 21:00 Village Cinemas at The Mall Athens (Followed by BIOS Party at 22:30 with DJ Angelos Kletsikas)

“Meet Me in the Bathroom” (Dylan Southern, Will Lovelace, 2021)

A few years ago, Lizzie Goodman decided to talk to just about everyone who was responsible for the 2000s New York indie renaissance, as well as those who lived it “on the outside” or behind the scenes. From many hours of video footage of these interviews, Meet Me in the Bath is not only a book that reads like a documentary, but one of the most enjoyable and lively music books we’ve read in years. Southern and Lovelace decided to retell this story on screen and remind us why we once loved Strokes, Interpol, LCD Soundsystem and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

It will show: Thursday, October 6, 22:00, Ideal (foreword by journalist and radio producer Panagiotis Menegos) / Sunday, October 9, 22:00, Asti

“Ennio” (Giuseppe Tornatore, 2022)

“Maestro” Ennio Morricone’s career has been unique and his contribution to film soundtracks is invaluable. One of the directors for whose films he wrote music, Giuseppe Tornatore, once opened the camera and allowed Morricone to recount moments from his rich career. Together with other figures of cinema and music, they spoke about the Italian composer, turning this documentary into a summing up of his entire career.

It will show: Saturday 1 October, 19:30, Athens Concert Hall (in the presence of the composer’s son Marco Morricone, documentary producer Gianni Russo and Morricone’s official biographer Alessandro de Rosa. He will be preceded by a concert of his composition by the Stavros Lanzias Quartet)

“History of the Triffids” (Jonathan Alley, 2021)

Back in the 80s, the Australian underground was in full swing. Among the bands that descended from them were the Triffids, and with tracks like “Wide Open Road” they found success miles away from their homeland. Said documentary attempts to tell the story of their “leader” David McComb and evoke memories of those who encountered the triffids in the first year.

It will show: Friday, September 30, 19:30, Danaos / Saturday, October 1, 22:00, Danaos
