Spain’s industry minister, Reyes Maroto, said on Monday that requiring energy-intensive companies to close during peak consumption hours is an option that could be considered this winter if needed.
Companies will receive financial compensation, she told the Spanish news agency Europa Press, adding that there is no need to introduce such closures today.
Spain has cut its gas consumption by 7% this winter, compared to 15% elsewhere in the European Union, as the Iberian country is not dependent on Russian natural gas.
In winter, heating in all public places in Spain will be limited to 19 degrees. In addition, to avoid wasting energy, front doors can no longer be left open when air conditioning or heating is on, as is the practice in many stores.
