A few days ago, the curtain fell on the 2022 American Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, that is, the main events of world tennis. The winners in the women’s and men’s singles were two Rolex acquaintances, Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcarat. After two weeks of tough matches on the courts, the Polish Swiatek won the third Grand Slam title of her career, and for the only 19-year-old Spaniard, Alcarata, this was the first appearance on the Grand Slam podium. Iga Swiatek defeated her Tunisian rival Ons Zamber in a thrilling 6-2, 7-6 match. Carlos Alcarato, the youngest US Open finalist since 1990, defeated Norwegian Kasper Rudd in four sets 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.
The US Open trophy is Swiatek’s seventh – at least so far – in 2022. This is her second Grand Slam title this year after the world No. 1 also won the Roland Garros tournament in Paris. Her ability on any surface she plays is impressive. With this victory, Swiatek joins the Rolex Testimonees family, which is made up of outstanding personalities, each excelling in their own field, along with other great tennis players who won the US Open such as 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu, Angelique Kerber and Sloane Stevens. who won in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
At the awards ceremony in New York, Iga Swiatek wore a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust in Everose gold with a white dial and Latin numerals.
Carlos Alcarata’s win catapulted him to the top of the world rankings – he became the youngest tennis player at 19 – and placed him in an “exclusive club” of Rolex ambassadors (Testimonees, as the Swiss company calls them) who have their name engraved on the legendary trophy. Among them are 2020 winner Dominic Thiem, 2009 winner Juan Martin Del Potro and, of course, the mammoth Roger Federer who won the US Open five times in a row from 2004 to 2008 (the only one to do so).
When Carlos Alcarat stepped onto the podium to receive the trophy, he was wearing a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona chronograph with a black dial.
Rolex’s association with tennis began in 1978 when the company became the official timekeeper of the Wimbledon Championships, the oldest tennis tournament in the world. Since then, the Swiss company has been active in the sport, supporting major events including all four Grand Slams, as well as partnering with top athletes and tennis governing bodies. At the US Open, he has been the official timekeeper since 2018.
