Russia is acting “horribly, and this is visible and repeated every time the Russian wave retreats from parts of the territories occupied by it in Ukraine. We see what it leaves behind,” the head of American diplomacy told reporters.

“And the latest discovery, obviously, of more than 440 graves in Izyum is a reminder of that,” he said.

He called on the Ukrainian authorities to document these atrocities, stressing that “in many cases these will be war crimes.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Friday that “more than 400 bodies” had been found in a mass grave near Izyum, a town recently recaptured by the Ukrainian army from the Russians.

About 200 wooden crosses were found on Friday near the town of Izyum in northeastern Ukraine, witnesses told Reuters, after authorities announced the discovery of a mass grave in an area retaken by Ukrainian forces in recent days. Earlier, Reuters reported that this will be the second mass grave.

Several bodies were found with ropes around their necks and hands tied, Reuters reported.
