On Thursday evening, he was asked on the B1TV station if there is an intention at the municipal level to change the parking rules so that there are no differentiated zones and a single rate of five lei, Nikusor Dan confirmed, reports Agerpres.

“At the moment there is zone zero with 10 lei, zone I with 5 lei and zone II with 2.5 lei, but there are very few parking spaces in zone II – I don’t know if there are 150-200, out of 10,000 that’s all . And then, at this point, in order to make things simple for everyone, this is a proposal that the general counsels are supporting to simplify this regulation significantly. (…) (This proposal, no) is not valid now, but I confirm that these discussions exist and there is, practically, a consensus on this issue,” he said.

“We apply this resolution not in order to take money from the budget, but in order to make the movement more civilized”

At the same time, the mayor noted that after the local authorities started applying parking rules, more and more citizens prefer to leave their cars on the outskirts and use public transport.

“Suddenly, the parking lot at Cora Pantelimon became much more crowded. Why Because if you say that parking in the center of Bucharest is free, no matter how much you park and drive around Bucharest, no one will leave their car there, take public transport, come to the center,” he said.

Nikusor Dan stressed that the municipality applies parking rules not to obtain additional income, but to create more civilized traffic. He added that currently 10,000 parking spaces are marked, but in a year and a half their number will increase to 150,000.

“We apply this regulation not in order to take money from the budget, but in order to make traffic more civilized, as Western cities did 30-40-50 years ago. (…) It will take us a year and a half to mark out probably 150,000 parking spaces in the central ring. And when we finish it, it will really be visible,” the mayor also said.
