Several local elected officials have been called in by the police in Russia after they demanded the indictment of Russian President Vladimir Putin, CNN reports.
In a rare display of dissent in the country, members of the Smolninsky Municipal Council in the St. Petersburg region called on the Russian State Duma to impeach President Vladimir Putin for treason for starting the war in Ukraine.
The author of this call, Russian MP Dmytro Palyuga, says that Putin is responsible for “(1) exterminating capable young Russians who would serve the workforce better than the army; (2) economic recession in Russia and brain drain; (3) NATO’s eastward expansion, including the addition of Finland and Sweden to “double” the border with Russia; (4) the opposite effect of the “special military operation” in Ukraine.”
Then Palyuga and fellow deputy Nikita Yuferev published on Twitter the summonses issued to them by the St. Petersburg police for “discrediting the authorities.”
Palyuga later said two of the four Russian lawmakers had been released by police and were expected to be fined.
