The geological formation, which has long been considered the northernmost island on Earth, is not really an island, but an iceberg covered with gravel, Danish researcher René Forsberg said, quoted by DPA on Friday, quoted by Agerpres.
Danish and Swedish researchers discovered this iceberg, which was believed to be an island, north of Greenland in 2021. After recent research, they discovered that water is flowing under the formation, which means that it is actually an iceberg.
Rene Forsberg says that all the islands discovered after 1978 in the region were eventually visited, and none of them are actually islands.
Last year, researchers from a Swedish-Danish team exploring the area north of Greenland decided that the formation, which they believe is an island measuring 30 by 60 meters, should be called Kekertak Avannarlek, a term taken from the indigenous inhabitants of Greenland, equivalent to expression “northernmost island”. It was 800 meters north of Udaak Island, which until then was considered the closest land to the North Pole.
But after the new discovery, the status of the island of Udaak came into question. Scientists now say that another nearby island, Kekertaat, may actually be the northernmost island on Earth.
