Follower of his far-right president Brazil, Jair Bolsonarostabbed to death a supporter of leftist ex-President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva as political tensions escalate in the country ahead of October’s presidential election.
The incident took place in the state of Mato Grosso in the central-western part of Brazil, when blood caught fire during an argument between two men. Polls show that Bolsonaro will be defeated by Lula in this election.
Rafael Silva de Oliveira, 24, stabbed 42-year-old Benedito Cardoso dos Santos to death, according to police. He was arrested, confessed and prosecuted.
Bolsonaro hinted that he would not accept defeat in the elections, citing baseless allegations of electoral fraud and problems with the e-voting system.
In July, a similar incident occurred when a member of Lula’s opposition Workers’ Party was shot dead by a Bolsonaro loyalist prison guard. Earlier this morning, a Bolsonaro supporter suffered a head injury and said he was attacked by Lula’s supporters who were waiting for him to arrive at an event in San Gonzalo, Rio de Janeiro.
