Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbors have asked Netflix to remove content deemed “contrary to Islamic and societal values,” threatening the platform with legal action, according to a statement on Tuesday cited by AFP.
A joint statement from Saudi Arabia’s telecommunications regulators did not specify the nature of the content considered offensive.
“The platform has been contacted with a request to remove content, especially content intended for children,” the statement said.
The authorities will ensure that the platform complies with the guidelines and, if illegal content continues to be broadcast, they will take the necessary legal action,” it warned.
Netflix did not immediately respond.
Saudi media have been more specific about the content they find offensive in the GCC statement, referring to films with LGBTQ characters.
The state-run Al-Ekhbariya channel condemned “children’s films and series with scenes that promote homosexuality through Netflix.”
In a live broadcast, the lawyer complained about “very inappropriate and painful scenes for our children, grandchildren and the future generation.”
In a separate section, the Al-Ekhbariya channel showed scenes from the cartoon “Jurassic World: Camp Chalk” in which two female characters kiss, whose faces were blurred.
