
Davyd Popovichi respected the status of a great favorite and once again raised the tricolor to the highest step of the podium of honor at the World Junior Swimming Championship, our athlete won a gold medal in the distance of 100 m freestyle.
In the grand final in Lima (Peru), David won with a score of 47.13.
The podium was completed by the Croatian Jere Hribar (49.37) and the Cypriot Nicholas Antoniou (49.91).
Patrick Sebastian Dinou finished in 5th place (50.09).
At the junior swimming championships in Lima (Peru), David Popovici won a gold medal in the 100 and 200-meter freestyle, as well as gold in the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay and silver in the mixed 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
Romania will be represented in today’s final by two more athletes: Vlad Stancu (1500 m freestyle – time 02:47) and Bianca Costea (50 m freestyle – time 03:17).
Romania, an extraordinary result at the Junior World Championship in Lima
So far, Romania has won six medals at the World Championships in Lima:
- silver at the distance of 400 m freestyle among men (Vlad Stanku)
- gold in the men’s 4×100 m freestyle relay (David Popovici, Alexandru Constantinescu, Stefan Kozma and Patrick Sebastian Dinu)
- gold at the distance of 200 m freestyle (David Popovichi)
- silver in the 4×100 m freestyle medley relay (David Popovici, Patrick Sebastian Dinu, Bianca Costea and Rebecca Diaconescu)
- bronze at the distance of 800 m freestyle among men (Vlad Stanku).
- gold at the distance of 100 m freestyle (David Popovichi).

David Popovici won two gold medals at the European Swimming Championships in Rome, our athlete was unstoppable in the 100m freestyle and also in the 200m freestyle.
We will remind you that in June of this year, David Popovichi did a double at the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, he managed to prove himself at distances of 100 and 200 m free swimming.
During the entire World Swimming Championships, only one athlete managed to win the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events from the same edition.
It happened 49 years ago, and the person celebrating this feat is called Jim Montgomery (USA – he is now 67 years old). That year, the competition was hosted by Belgrade.
