AT Alonissos the first organized underwater civil wedding took place on Monday, August 29, at the initiative of the municipality.
Petros and Mirto exchanged vows of eternal love and fidelity on the enchanting seabed of Alonissos. The couple were married by the Mayor of Alonissos, Petros Vafinis, who obtained a diving license to hold weddings in the turquoise waters of the island.
The “gift” at the bottom of the sea was presented by two bridesmaids, Tourism Commission Chair Maria Agallow, who took over the organization of the wedding, and three diving instructors volunteered by the Triton Dive Center.
It is worth noting that the entire ritual was observed literally through the use of special waterproof surfaces with all civil marriage procedures, as well as from the words of the newlyweds, who immediately removed their masks after exchanging vows for their first wedding kiss.
The wedding was filmed by an underwater camera operator, which was broadcast live on a large screen installed on the beach for guests, and could also be viewed from a mobile phone.
Earlier on Valentine’s Day, the municipality of Alonissos made a request to organize an underwater wedding, which immediately piqued the interest of the couples.
“Indescribable feelings that overwhelm you downstairs during the wedding. Under the ideal conditions of tranquility offered by underwater nature, time stops and this moment belongs exclusively to the couple,” Mayor Alonissos told APE-MPE after the ceremony.
“Our goal is to “open” a new market for Greece and the island. Alonissos is emerging as an international diving destination, chosen this year by hundreds of scuba divers from around the world. In general, very high occupancy was recorded on the island throughout the summer season, reaching 100% in August, and the tourist flow will continue until the first ten days of October,” added Mr. Vafinis.
