
Six months later war in UkraineamA small majority of Americans agree that the US should continue to support Kyiv until Russia withdraws all of its forces.according Reuters/Ipsos poll which was released today.
The poll shows that Americans, despite economic concerns and domestic political developments that have drawn their attention in recent months, continue to support President Joe Biden’s policy of supporting Ukraine.
The administration has provided Ukraine with weapons and ammunition to help it fight back against Russian forces and is expected to announce a new security assistance package worth about $3 billion, a US official said, as Ukraine celebrates Independence Day today.
Among the 1,005 people in the US who took part in an online survey last week, 53% were in favor of supporting Ukraine “until all Russian troops leave the territories claimed by Ukraine.” Only 18% said they were against it.
This support comes from both sides of the political spectrum, although Democratic voters were more likely to support the position, with 66% of Democrats supporting it compared to 51% of Republicans.
A small majority 51% also support the provision of weapons such as pistols and anti-tank weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, compared to 22% who oppose.
In previous polls, the percentage of Americans in favor of supplying weapons to Ukraine was higher, but there are no direct comparable polls.
As in previous polls, Support for sending US troops to Ukraine is low among Americans across the political spectrum. Only 26% said they supported such an intervention, but 43% agreed with sending US troops to NATO allies who are Ukraine’s neighbors and not at war with Russia.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
