Russian authorities have detained politician Yevgeny Roizman, known for his criticism of the Kremlin and, more recently, of the military campaign in Ukraine, the Russian news agency TASS reported on Wednesday with reference to Reuters.
The former mayor of Yekaterinburg Roizman is being investigated for “discrediting the Russian army”, reports TASS with reference to Yekaterinburg’s special services.
Roizman was one of several Kremlin critics who won mayoral posts after a series of large opposition demonstrations during President Vladimir Putin’s 2012 campaign.
Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special military operation” aimed at ensuring its own security, and Russian authorities have detained a number of activists for calling it a war or criticizing Russia’s actions.
