
In Greece, a participant of a night race in the mountains was killed by lightning last night. Another participant in the competition was seriously injured, according to local authorities, AP reports, News.ro writes.
The two men were competing in the Six Peaks race, a route that includes the six highest peaks of Mount Falakro in northern Greece. At 04:00 local time, lightning struck a group of runners at an altitude of 1,340 meters.
Two rescue teams from the nearby town of Drama intervened. However, they found the 55-year-old runner already dead and the 56-year-old runner in critical condition. The wounded man was taken to Kavala by helicopter.
The 35.7-kilometer race started on Saturday at 19:00 local time in the city of Pirgoi. The six peaks of Mount Falakro, the highest, are over 2,000 meters high.
The weather was good when the race started, but on the way it rained and the course became muddy. By the time lightning struck, some runners had finished the race. 55 competitors had 12 hours to complete the race.
