President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Ukrainians to be vigilant ahead of the 31st anniversary of independence from Soviet rule on Wednesday, suggesting that Ukraine will retake Crimea this year.

Ukrainians should not allow Moscow to “spread despair and fear” ahead of the events of August 24, which also took place exactly six months after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Zelenskyy said on Saturday.

“We should all be aware that this week Russia may try to do something particularly nasty, particularly evil,” Zelensky said in his address on Saturday night.

In his speech, Zelenskyi also mentioned the recent series of explosions in Crimea, a Ukrainian territory annexed by Russia in 2014.

Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the attacks, but analysts say at least some of them were made possible by new equipment used by its forces.

“This year, it is literally felt in the air of Crimea that the occupation there is temporary, and Ukraine will return,” Zelenskyy said.

In the latest attack in Crimea, the Russian-appointed governor, who is not recognized by the West, said a drone struck a building near the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet early Saturday.
