Emmanuel Caralis made the revelation through his social media accounts. The Greek pole vault champion and 4th Tokyo Olympic medalist revealed that he suffered a panic attack this season, causing him to suffer from anxiety and depression.
The 22-year-old athlete announced the end of his competition this year. As he mentioned, he will take a break to find his smile again.
Karalis on Thursday took part in the qualifying tournament of the European Championship in Munich, staying away from the final.
“After the injury I suffered during the season on the track, a series of events completely ruined my mood.
For the first time this year, I had a full-blown panic attack that left me feeling anxious and depressed for a while. I put a lot of pressure on myself to change the situation, but it only made things worse and unfortunately the “evil” Manolo took over.
I forced myself to continue the season and try to be positive and enjoy every race the way I do, but I always felt lost and unmotivated.
I am tired and feel completely exhausted. I end my season here. I need some rest and I need some time to focus on my mental health. I need to take a break to get my smile back.”
