The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday that three MiG-31E fighter jets equipped with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles have been redeployed to the Kaliningrad region, Interfax reported with reference to Reuters.
The Russian state news agency RIA reported with reference to the ministry that MiG aircraft will be on duty 24 hours a day.
Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave on the Baltic Sea coast between NATO and European Union members Poland and Lithuania, has become a hot spot after Lithuania decided to restrict the transit of goods to the region through its territory and Russia vowed to retaliate. Tensions in the region have increased since Russia invaded Ukraine.
Earlier on Thursday, the Ministry of Defense of Finland said that two Russian MiG-31 fighter jets were suspected of violating the country’s airspace near the city of Porvoo, located in the Gulf of Finland 150 km from Russia.
