Fashion designer Giorgio Armani and dozens of other people were forced to leave their villas overnight as firefighters battled a wildfire on the Sicilian island of Pantelleria, DPA and Wanted in Rome reported.
Designer Giorgio Armani had to leave his villa on the east coast of the popular celebrity island. According to media reports, he and his guests took off aboard their yacht late Wednesday night.
Officials said on Thursday that two firefighting planes and several firefighting units were still battling the blaze on the island, located between Tunisia and Sicily, Agerpres writes.
The vegetation fire broke out late Wednesday night and so far there do not appear to be any casualties, the fire department said Thursday.
However, according to the Sicilian civil protection agency, some wooden roofs and houses, as well as forests, burned.
“The wind and the flames are easing, the worst seems to be over,” Pantelleria Mayor Vincenzo Campo told the ANSA news agency.
The fires broke out in at least two locations several hundred meters apart and were fanned by the wind, authorities said.
The prosecutor’s office began to investigate the cause of the fire, while not ruling out human actions or negligence.
