The Armenian government has declared two days of national mourning (August 17 and 18) for those killed in the explosion that took place on Sunday in Yerevan’s Surmalou market.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 16 people died, the fate of three more is unknown, seven of the wounded are still in hospitals.
The reasons for the powerful explosion remain unclear. Yesterday on Monday Minister of Emergency Situations Armen Pambukhchyan ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.
Some media in Armenia, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the explosion occurred in a place where fireworks were stored.
The Yerevan authorities ordered an investigation to clarify the circumstances under which the fatal tragedy occurred.
