Columns of black smoke were seen on Tuesday at a Russian military air base near the town of Gvardiyske in the central part of Russian-controlled Crimea, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported, Reuters reported.

According to The Guardian, the military base is located approximately 93 kilometers from the ammunition depot that was damaged on Tuesday morning near the town of Jankoy in northern Crimea.

The Ministry of Defense of Russia called the series of explosions around the town of Jankoy in the north of Crimea “sabotage”, reports the state news agency RIA.

Ukraine has not officially confirmed or denied its involvement in the recent series of explosions in Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014.

But a high-ranking Ukrainian official told The New York Times on condition of anonymity that an elite Ukrainian military unit operating behind enemy lines was responsible for the explosion at the Dzhankoy warehouse, which caused multiple detonations, Ukrainian Pravda reports.

The New York Times suggests that since the beginning of the war, Ukraine has used unconventional tactics in an attempt to defeat an enemy that is vastly outnumbered.

Investigative journalist Hristo Grozev says that at the time of the explosions, there were 12 SU-24M and 12 SU-25SM aircraft at the air base, which is part of the Russian Navy.
